Of Local Interest

Peebles was granted its Royal Burgh status in 1152 and is the 3rd largest town in the Borders. It has boasted many famous historical figures including: John Buchan, Mungo Park and The Chambers’ Brothers.

Peebles has a weekly general market every Thursday and a farmers market the 2nd Saturday of the month. It has also been named as the Top Independent Retailing Town in Scotland, due to its array of independently-run and unique shops.

The 14th Century Neidpath Castle lies on the banks of the River Tweed, just 1 mile west of Peebles. The Castle is open from May until end September.

Many of Scotland’s kings and queens have frequented Traquair House. Dating back to 1107, Traquair House is the oldest continually inhabited house in Scotland. The 1745 Cottage Restaurant and the Brewery are frequent award winners.

Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre is housed within a converted church. It has a very full schedule of events from the latest film releases to “Open Mic Nights” showcasing local bands and talent.

The spa at St. Ronan’s Wells, Innerleithen has had many famous visitors including Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott. The mineral waters were believed to have curative effects. The water is still “on tap” and the pavilion is open daily.

The Teviot Water Gardens and Smokery in Kelso are an inspiration for the keen gardener. The Smokery foodhall sells a range of traditionally smoked products from salmon and duck, to cheese.

The 4 Abbey's - Dryburgh Abbey, Kelso Abbey, Jedburgh Abbey and Melrose Abbey are all worth a visit. The site of Jedburgh Abbey dates back to the 700's.
